A place called Perry

Angie and I were sitting in her living room shooting the breeze when Garry came in and started babbling in the way in which Garry does…non-sequitur and sentence fragments usually…but we both picked up on a comment about Perry.  It seems there is to be a new casino there……..now casinos are all over the fine state of Oklahoma so that wasn’t newsworthy…but the next minute Garry said “they’re building it downtown”……………..

SAY WHAT?  Casinos are all over but they are on major highways on huge plots of land…easier to get thousands there gaming day and night……..tons of parking, little golf carts to pick you up and drive you to the entrances…………..PERRY is a tiny town……..there’s an old historic downtown area and one main drag………..then there are the residential areas north south and east of downtown……………if the casino is going downtown where in heck are they going to put it? can’t go on the square…the Otoe-Missouria tribe doesn’t own land downtown……………Angie and I just HAD to go scope this out.

So it was off to her van for a DAYTRIP!!! whahoooooooooooooooooo

I adore going places with Angie…we find the most unusual places to visit and always have a blast….there is always some strange thing to make fun of or laugh at…like the cow house creek sign in Texas………..no cows……….no houses or barns……not even a creek! BUT there the sign was and it kept us giggling like loons for a good three days!   Anyway, we threw Garry in the backseat, Angie drove and I rode shotgun to Perry Oklahoma to see if we could find this new casino lot………………we drove thru downtown (cute little 1800’s western buildings),

             we hung a left and wandered on by the high school baseball and football fields..entered a nice little (very old) residential neighborhood and spotted the construction for the new casino………….

The lot size is approximately 50 by 100 feet in between two old and rather run down houses (they looked abandoned actually)……….there was NO space for a parking lot at all…..and we all got the giggles over a casino of 12 stories tall but inside would be 3 by 4 feet in width due to the parking requirements……………..(yes we got silly)…………but the space was so small none of us could even imagine what the tribe was thinking……………..so after coming home I decided to look through news sources to see if I could find just what the tribe was doing…….      {{Now this picture (that I swiped from the Otoe-M, etc tribal website) is of 3 lots…not one and the photo is taken at ground level and on an angle so the lots look really really huge. The actual city lots are (from the city website dude) 35 feet by 75 feet in size……………}}

and I found this: from the Otoe-Missouria tribal council news: “The Otoe-Missouria Tribe of Oklahoma is expanding its gaming enterprise.The tribe announced plans for a new casino in the town of Perry. It appears to be a small endeavor — the parcel of trust land is just one lot — but Chairman John Shotton was excited nonetheless.“I see it as a win-win for the city as well as the tribe,” Shotton told KFOR. “It is unique because it’s one lot in the city, which is trust land, which is eligible for gaming,” he added.” Dude…it is ONE lot! ONE!

 Ummmmm, what about parking? Turns out the tribe has purchased two abandoned homes on either side of their lot…..and they are going to pave it all for a parking lot.. (I hear Joni Mitchell singing..”they paved paradise to put up a parking lot”)…but they haven’t applied for a zoning variance nor do they have any plans to do so………….I guess Angie and I will just have to wait till the casino is finished and then go see what they did about parking….
