Once more into a cardiac breach

I took George to his followup medical exam yesterday, thinking it would be nothing much………

After all, George came through surgery and has been recovering nicely. His rehab is going great, his color is better, he is sleeping better, eating better…and he is happy most of the time now.

So, I really wasn’t prepared for the doctor to say “well, George..you are in cardiac failure and we need to implant a defibrillator”.

Now, I logically understand the difference between heart failure and heart attack.  A heart attack occurs when there is a blockage in a vein or artery that interrupts blood flow through the heart. Cardiac or heart failure is a matter of electricity, or failure of a valve.  I get this.

BUT, He just had freakin open heart surgery and they should have fixed him!

so, today after calming down overnight, I started making phone calls.

First to the Veteran’s Administration for a referral and authorization approval…42 minutes waiting through Muzak and 7 transfers later I was told “he is pre-authorized through Sept 30, 2019 for all cardiac services”. I (of course because I am NOT stupid) asked for a confirmation letter.  TO BE FAXED….NOW. I got it too!

Then it was a call to the cardiologist to schedule yet another surgery…5 phone transfers and 28 minutes on hold later I was connected……and the doctor wasn’t available, BUT the nurse would ask first thing in the morning to schedule George for surgery……….

another four transfers and a 17 minute hold and I spoke with the prescription filler for George’s new meds…..4 transfers and a 22 minute hold later I was able to speak with the billing department and make arrangements for the VA to be billed for upcoming services.

I am grateful…truly grateful the VA is picking up George’s medical bills and prescriptions…I AM!   BUT, the massive amount of bullshit one has to wade through to get services is astonishing!

In any event, we should have a surgery date as soon as next week for this implantation…and I will be once again freaking out as it is an “OUTPATIENT procedure”!

  1. Oh Suze… I feel for you and George! It seems like what you are going through, stress-wise, is a lot like what Mom is experiencing… The stress, the waiting, the bad news one after the other… I am sending you my warmest thoughts!! *Big hugs* to you two!! xx

      1. There is something so cruel in the waiting, when you know something is going wrong… And just like you said it, we were, hum, disappointed (not to say furious) that before performing the carotid surgery on Dad, they couldn’t see the heart troubles he also had, even if they (apparently) ran all kinds of tests to make sure everything was good before they operated on him!!

I know your only priority is to get George well for now, but please take time to care about you, dear Suze! xx

      2. thank you. I am trying. I gave up watching the news as it just raised my temper (and blood pressure), I have been gardening and making a quilt..both of which relax me…..But, I really think what would help the most is being allowed to slap that doctor silly without any repercussions! lol

      3. That would be a more than reasonable request… I say, as long as you don’t go for the hands (especially if he is a surgeon), it should be legal 😛

  2. I feel your frustration Suze, saying prayers for George! I’m still waiting for the insurance to approve my MRI, I guess I’ll be married to this brace forever!

      1. 🤣🤣
I wish it was that easy, they just keep denying that it’s necessary, even after the doctor submitted 26 pages of paperwork…twice! Then I filled out more, and gave them a piece of my mind in the process!

      2. ask for the patient advocate. they can usually get the insurance companies to allow specific care they just don’t want to pay for.

  3. Sorry to hear George needs another surgery.
Glad you got all the calls made, and all that is done.
Our neighbor has had one of those defibrillator for years, and is doing fine, so I’m sure it will help George, too. It’s just scary to think about it.
    Sending hugs ❤

  12. Suze, may the One grant George a total healing and comfort. May He give you both strength to weather the upcoming events. This will probably mess with your camping trip. Thinking of you and your sweetie.
