syw…april 16, 2019

I’m a day late with the syw responses…thanks, Mel, for not kicking me out of the non-existent group of people syw’s on time…………….

Guns? Are you pro or con? Explain your point of view. I always piss people off when discussing guns.  But i’m gonna answer this anyway. A bit of background first. I was raised with guns, taught how to shoot and care for them, and taught to respect the danger of them in the wrong hands…or just mucking about. I was a card carrying member of the NRA for over 30 years. I had both my children attend gun safety classes, and I carried for ten years as a parole officer. I never once pulled it.  After the mass shooting in Connecticut, I started to rethink my position on guns…especially after the NRA started mouthing off about it wasn’t a gun’s fault, it was a nutcase that caused any problems…”problems” being somehow the word to describe mass shootings of children. I thought rational gun laws (better background checks, a cooling off period of a few weeks before one could carry home a purchase, no online or garage sales of weapons) would keep us safer and perhaps save some kids…and was yelled at for my stance at an NRA meeting.  Now? Now I am completely against anyone outside of the military or police forces carrying. no concealed anything..never mind being allowed to conceal carry in or near a school or church. Allowing teachers to conceal carry and making police of them is absurd and dangerous…..

Handguns should be outright banned. sorry, but unless you are in the military or on a police force you should give up the damned gun. Rifles are great if you use them to EAT what you hunt. Shotguns, same as rifles. Anything that can be altered from semi to full auto should be melted down and create something else from it. Any cartridge that holds more than four or five bullets should be outlawed. I’d actually prefer that all guns be pellet and black powder style rifles. That would slow down any moron trying to hurt people long enough for a cop to take his or her ass out permanently. Screw the second amendment. I strongly doubt the founding fathers ever thought people would be carting around uzi-like weaponry to scout out churches or kindergartens to shoot up. And, no I don’t need to hear anyone else’s opinion on the matter. Criminals will always be around. they will always find a means of getting a bigger than yours and they won’t hesitate to use it. Having your own is not gonna stop a criminal.

How would your country change if everyone, regardless of age, could vote?  what age are you asking about? if the kindergartners vote we’d have big bird for president….and ya know. that doesn’t sound like a bad idea right now.

What’s your cure for hiccups?  I don’t get hiccups. so, I don’t really know.

What’s the coldest you’ve ever been?   living under a bridge in an abandoned car in Tennessee in the winter…

If you would like, share a story, a photo or some thoughts on you may be thankful for this week!  I am enormously thankful that George is recovering from his implant surgery…now we just have to get used to the idea that he has a defibrillator implanted in his chest.

  1. I share your current view on guns and gun laws 100%, Suze! The Founders did not, in their wildest imaginations, envision how the 2nd Amendment would be interpreted in later years, nor did they, I’m quite sure, envision the types of weapons we have today … weapons that can mow down a hundred people inside a minute or two. My thoughts are they belong only in the hands of law enforcement and the military. Never happen, of course, but we need to at least start making some serious progress. Ban assault-type weapons, background checks, required 2-week training, skills testing, limits of one gun per household, etc.

    Glad George is recovering!

  3. Thanks Suze for Sharing Your World. Your thoughts on guns are very sensible, a factor that I personally think has been removed from a lot of owners. Anyone convicted of killing children or shooting up buildings “just because” or going into God’s Holy House (whatever faith you are) and doing that, should (IMHO) be killed via firing squad. No plea bargains, no mercy. And at the root of some of those shootings is mental health illness…we need to fix that problem too while we’re at it. Turning someone who is schizophrenic and who probably can’t afford or won’t take their meds? Asking for trouble for the person and society. We really live in a broken world, don’t we/ It’s sad.
